Review of "The Sword" by DawnEB
January 3, 2007
It arrived through the letterbox this morning; Jean Johnson's The Sword.
And here I am, sixteen hours later, wondering how long it will be before I can get my sweaty little hands on the second volume. The following contains spoilers (although I won't give too much away, promise), and is a purely subjective review. You've been warned.
Still here? Okay, I'll begin. The first couple of chapters were heavy in character introductions. As there were nine of them we need to get to know, it wasn't suprising, but I felt a bit overwhelmed with all the info. Once we got past that, the fun really started :) Due to the nature of the book, being primarily a romance, I was expecting a certain amount of cliché. However, I wasn't disappointed with the way Jean Johnson, as with her fanfic, used the cliché with humour and little twists to keep the pace and readablity with an added dash of freshness, rather than go to torturous lengths to avoid them. There was one part, near the end, where I was talking out loud to one of the characters; 'You're not going to fall for that one, are you? Don't do that, it's obviously (censored)! Duh, living on an island with only your brothers for company is no excuse, you've only yourself to blame.' (Luckily, Brian is used to me after all this time, so he just made me a cuppa and left me to it). There are some intriguing ideas and mysterious characters/hints that will keep me looking out for the next book, there are some blatantly obvious things that allow for some nice plot and character development along the way. There were bits that I'd love to share, but that would be giving too much away. Suffice to say, I enjoyed the book :) Bless your generous, fun-filled heart, Jean!

Author's Note: Dawn participated in a contest I held, the prize for which was an autographed, advanced reviewer's copy of The Sword. ~JJ
